Phased Array (PA)

The conventional ultrasonic transducers that are used for NDT applications commonly consist of either a single active element, that both generates and receives waves with high frequency, or two paired elements, one for receiving and one for transmitting. On the contraryPhased Array (PA) probes typically consist of a transducer assembly with 16 up to 256 small individual elements, with each one of them able to be pulsed separately.

The main advantages that the phased array method offers in comparison to conventional UT is the higher probability of detection, the overall faster inspection process, the ability to minimize false calls, the ability to store and process at any time the results of the inspection and the higher confidence of results.

Trainees of the PA department in TQCC become familiar with multi-group operation of phased array equipment, combining different types of scanning, for the inspection and analysis of a wide range of weld specimens containing various types of defects that can be found within the industry. During the course candidates become familiar with the corrosion mapping process of various specially fabricated specimens containing multiple types of corrosion.
