Ultrasonic Testing (UT)

The Ultrasonic Testing (UT) method is based on the principle that each discontinuity, inside a solid mean, shall produce a reflection (echo) of the ultrasound. A sensitive and effective method to releave discontinuities near the surface but also at high depth inside the material. Ideal for internal planal discontinuities (cracks, lack of fusion). Measurements for the loss of material (e.g. due to corrosion or mechanical abrasion, can be conducted using UT.

The method requires a very good training of the testing personnel. The initial cost (UT apparatus, probes, calibration of equipment) is rather high.

Quite useful is the measurement of the thickness of a part and the corrosion test, using an ultrasonic gauge. Corrosion/erosion monitoring can also be conducted using UT.
