Penetrant Testing (PT)
Basic steps of the Penetrant Testing (PT) method:
  • Pre-cleaning of the surface
  • Application of penetrant-Dwell time-application of developer
  • Observation, Recording of indications

An easy and simple technique, as far as certain basic rules are followed. It does not require complicated or expensive equipment. It does not require electric current (in the case of visual penetrants and the existence of adequate physical lightening).
Three cans (cleaner, penetrant, developer) are sufficient for the implementation of the examination.
It can be applied to conductive or non-conductive materials, ferromagnetic or non-ferromagnetic, for the investigation of flaws open to the surface and especially cracks and pores.
It is a method that easily loses its sensitivity, if we do not follow strictly the prescribed steps. It can reveal only discontinuities open to the surface.
