The method of Magnetic Particle Testing (MT) is based on the following steps:
- Magnetization of the part that shall be examined
- Application of magnetic particles
- Forming of an indication at the location of leakage of the magnetic field.
The most suitable and sensitive method for revealing surface and slightly sub-surface discontinuities and especially cracks. Thorough pre-cleaning is not (usually) a requirement and even discontinuities filled up with foreign materials (non magnetic) can be revealed (rust, dust, salts etc.). Quick and simple to its implementation, a cheap method. An electromagnet and two cans with consumables are sufficient for the application of the method.
Its main restriction is that it can be applied only to ferromagnetic materials.
